Things to do in the Dandenong Ranges

Most first visits revolve around the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk / 1000 Steps, with Olinda Falls or Sherbrooke Falls as Plan B when crowds or fitness say otherwise. Quieter forest days live on the Eastern Sherbrooke side. This is a day-use park — do not try to collect every picnic ground on a first Melbourne visit.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park entry fees are never affiliated. Camping is not permitted inside Dandenong Ranges National Park.

Day one rule

Pick one primary experience (usually 1000 Steps or one falls/forest block). Do not collect every picnic ground on a first Melbourne day trip.

Weather / energy bail-out

Olinda Falls, Sherbrooke Falls or a quiet Eastern Sherbrooke loop beat a forced staircase in heat, mud or hangry kids. Bail-outs are competence.

Crowd / fire filter

Ferntree Gully often fills by ~10 am weekends — early start, One Tree Hill or train. Extreme FDR (and severe weather) closes the whole park, including the 1000 Steps.

  1. 1

Kokoda Track Memorial Walk / 1000 Steps

High volume · steep · peak weekends busy

The classic first-visit climb from Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground through rainforest to One Tree Hill — memorial plaques, steep continuous steps, real weekend crowd pressure. Early start or train Plan B.

  2. 2

    Olinda Falls Circuit

~1.2 km · picnic start · after rain

Short family-friendly circuit with upper and lower platforms — best after rain. Strong Plan B when 1000 Steps fitness or crowds are the issue.

  3. 3

    Sherbrooke Falls & Grants

    Easy–moderate · rainforest · lyrebirds

Tree-fern gullies, small cascade and lyrebird habitat on quieter hours. Busy on fine weekends — still calmer than midday Ferntree Gully.

  4. 4

    Eastern Sherbrooke Forest (quiet)

Quieter · longer · midweek best

Longer quieter forest alternative when the 1000 Steps is a fitness gym. Best midweek, winter, or early / late.

  5. 5

    Lookouts & Mountain Ash canopy

Views · forest atmosphere · weather dependent

Burkes Lookout (Melbourne / Port Phillip on clear days), Kalorama / Silvan views, One Tree Hill filtered outlooks, and tall Mountain Ash under fern understorey.

  6. 6

Picnic grounds & short family loops

    Day-use · gate hours · BBQs

Ferntree Gully, One Tree Hill, Olinda, Grants / Sherbrooke and Doongalla remnant gardens — toilets, tables and BBQs where signed. Gate hours apply; day-use only.

  7. 7

    Silvan mountain-bike trails (note)

MTB · Silvan · verify Parks Victoria

Beginner / intermediate singletrack and management tracks in the Silvan area. Confirm trail names, grades and open status on Parks Victoria — this page does not invent a ride inventory.

  8. 8

Nearby — not inside this park

    Clarification · outside park

Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden (Olinda) and SkyHigh Mount Dandenong (paid private lookout / café) sit near the Tourist Road but outside the national park. Separate tickets and hours — never copy their fees onto park entry.
