Half-day: 1000 Steps & One Tree Hill

3—5 hours on the ground (+ Melbourne travel)Best for: First visit focused on the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk

One solid climb of the 1000 Steps from Ferntree Gully, One Tree Hill turnaround or Lyrebird loop, a picnic stop, and enough time to get home — without pretending you can also do Sherbrooke and Olinda the same morning.

This is the “we came for the steps” plan. Success is a respectful memorial climb (or a smart early turnaround) plus toilets, water and getting out before the gate and crowd chaos owns you — not trying to see the whole Dandenong Ranges National Park before lunch. The Kokoda Track Memorial Walk is Melbourne’s default bushwalk brand; treat it like a focused half-day product, not a warm-up for five other picnic grounds.

From central Melbourne budget roughly 45—75+ minutes each way by car depending on traffic and exact route (M3 / Burwood Hwy / Mount Dandenong Tourist Road). Incidents on the Eastern Freeway and weekend Tourist Road queues routinely erase “optimistic” ETAs. Train via Upper Ferntree Gully is a real Plan B when the car park is the problem — station to base is about 1.2 km on foot [VERIFY PTV and last-mile].

Night before: check Parks Victoria change-of-conditions, VicEmergency / fire danger rating, and gate hours. Ferntree Gully picnic ground vehicle gates are listed 6:00 am — 9:00 pm daily [VERIFY]. Extreme FDR or severe weather = cancel; the whole park closes. In season, also skim deer-control night notices (selected nights 16 August – 19 November 2026 for signed sites — read which precincts that night).

Day entry appears free with no standard walk permit for ordinary visits [VERIFY live]. Dogs are prohibited (assistance dogs with requirements). There is no in-park camping — you are day-use only. This itinerary is planning guidance only — not live track or gate status.

Decide Plan A / Plan B before you leave: Plan A = climb from Ferntree Gully with same-way return or Lyrebird loop; Plan B = start or finish at One Tree Hill if the lower car park is already circling. Saying the plan out loud stops the group from rage-circling for forty minutes while the morning dies.

Respect is part of the product. Plaques commemorate Kokoda campaign veterans — keep music off, leave space on narrow steps for runners and slower walkers, and treat an early turnaround as a successful memorial visit, not a fitness fail.

Track status, weather, gate hours and fire ratings change — verify on Parks Victoria before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Free day entry does not mean empty Ferntree Gully car parks.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Confirm open + pack water

Check parks.vic.gov.au change-of-conditions, VicEmergency / FDR, and any deer-control night notices for the Ferntree Gully / One Tree Hill precinct. Charge phones and download or screenshot an offline map option. Pack 1+ L water per adult (more on warm days), sturdy shoes with grip, light rain layer, blister care and a small first-aid kit. Agree Plan A (lower trailhead) vs Plan B (One Tree Hill or train) out loud.

  2. 07:00—07:30

    Leave Melbourne with buffer

On fine weekends leave earlier than Google’s cheerful ETA. Add 20—40 minutes for Eastern Freeway / Tourist Road friction. Final Wi-Fi check of Parks Victoria alerts before you lose reliable signal in the gullies. If anyone is already exhausted or injured, switch to a short Olinda / Sherbrooke day instead of forcing the staircase.

  3. 07:30—08:30

    Arrive Ferntree Gully (or train)

Aim to be parked well before the ~10 am fill-up Parks Victoria warns about on weekend mornings. Default trailhead: Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground (toilets, picnic areas, signed memorial walk start). If the lower car park is already circling, stop fighting — divert to One Tree Hill or use Upper Ferntree Gully Station (~1.2 km walk to the base) [VERIFY]. Never leave bags visible in the car.

  4. 08:30—10:30

    Kokoda Track Memorial Walk

Climb past plaques toward One Tree Hill. Rough guide only: about 1.8–3+ km and 45—90+ minutes depending on fitness, photo stops and loop choice [VERIFY official wording]. Leave space on narrow steps for runners. Decide at the top: same-way return or Lyrebird Track loop. Photograph plaques without blocking the flow. Carry water either way — continuous stairs punish under-hydration.

  5. 10:30—11:30

    One Tree Hill buffer

Toilets, filtered views, snack and a honest group check-in. If anyone is done — kids, knees or energy — this is the pickup / finish point, not a failure. Confirm return route (same steps vs loop) before leaving the picnic ground. Top up water if you still have a descent ahead.

  6. 11:30—12:30

    Picnic or exit

Use Ferntree Gully picnic ground if returning to the lower car park. Eat food you brought — do not burn the half-day hunting a guaranteed café (Grants van/café patterns are temporary and not on this trailhead). Skip a second hard walk. Leave time for the Melbourne drive or Belgrave-line return.

  7. Afternoon

    Home with margin

Protect daylight and gate margins if you linger. Winter light dies earlier even when Ferntree Gully’s listed close is 9 pm. Note what worked (start time, train vs car, loop vs return) for the next visit — and resist “we’re so close, let’s add Sherbrooke” after a hard climb.

Parking & access tips

  • Ferntree Gully fills by ~10 am most weekend mornings — plan around that, not around brunch.
  • One Tree Hill is the official-suggested overflow / alternative start when the lower ground is circling.
  • Train removes the parking fight entirely on peak days (Upper Ferntree Gully → ~1.2 km walk).
  • Never leave bags visible in the car — peri-urban parks get smash-and-grab attention.
  • Do not block emergency access or invent parking on vegetation or verge grass.
  • Screenshot Parks Victoria parking / alert notes on home Wi-Fi before you leave the CBD.
  • If you arrive after 10 am on a fine Saturday, expect Plan B immediately — do not rage-circle for an hour.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Any second major walk (Sherbrooke / Olinda) the same half-day
  • Waiting for a café that may be closed or van-only [VERIFY]
  • Starting after 10 am on a fine Saturday and expecting solitude
  • Stacking SkyHigh or Botanic Garden “because we’re close” before the climb is done
  • Forcing the full Lyrebird loop when someone is already spent at the plaques
  • Leaving CBD after a late breakfast with no parking Plan B

Extra tips

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • Car park full at 9:15? Switch to One Tree Hill or train — do not rage-circle.
  • Rain making steps glass? Slow down, poles/handrails where present, or choose Olinda / Sherbrooke instead.
  • Kids spent at plaque three? Turn around — memorial visit still counts.
  • Extreme FDR or severe weather on the morning check? Cancel — whole park closed.
  • Someone injured or dizzy mid-climb? Descend early and use One Tree Hill pickup if the group split plans allow.

Crowds & shared steps

  • Expect runners, tourists and fitness groups on the same narrow staircase — leave space and keep right where etiquette fits.
  • Peak weekend mid-mornings are a conga line; early arrival is the only real crowd control you control.
  • Midweek and winter mornings are quieter if your calendar allows.
  • Headphones off near plaques; keep group chatter respectful of the memorial.

Respect & hard rules

  • Plaques commemorate Kokoda campaign veterans — treat the climb as a memorial walk, not only a workout.
  • Dogs prohibited (assistance dogs with requirements).
  • No camping; day-use only — do not overnight in the car park “to beat traffic.”
  • Stay on formed track; do not cut corners on soft edges.

Bail-outs that still count

  • One Tree Hill picnic as finish / pickup after a partial climb.
  • Same-way return instead of the Lyrebird loop when time or weather fails.
  • Train approach + shorter climb if parking fails completely.
  • Switch region to Olinda Falls / Sherbrooke if steps are iced with rain and the group is nervous.
