Full day: Ferntree Gully, One Tree Hill & quieter forest

7—9 hours doors-to-doors from MelbourneBest for: Visitors who want the icon climb plus a calmer forest second act

Morning 1000 Steps with early parking discipline, lunch reset, then Sherbrooke Falls or Eastern Sherbrooke — one hard climb and one quiet forest block, not five rushed picnic grounds.

A full day in the Dandenongs fails when you try to tick every waterfall, lookout and staircase before 3 pm. This plan does the busy climb first (while you can still park), then moves to quieter forest on purpose. The emotional arc is steep morning effort, picnic reset, then canopy — not a checklist war.

Entry appears free with no standard walk permit for ordinary visits [VERIFY]. No in-park camping — you are day-use only. Confirm FDR before committing; Extreme FDR or severe weather closes the whole park. Dogs are prohibited. Deer-control selected nights (16 August – 19 November 2026 window) can close signed sites after dark — keep dusk plans honest.

Build Melbourne traffic buffers on both ends. Friday pm and sunny Sunday returns onto the M3 / Eastern Freeway corridor are where “we had ages” goes to die. A full calendar day is still only one hard climb plus one calmer forest block if you want energy left for the drive.

Grants café realism matters for the afternoon: the permanent café has been temporarily closed with a mobile van pattern at times (often Tue—Sat in notices) [VERIFY live]. Bring lunch. Margaret Lester at Grants is not currently a full all-abilities product — read the live accessibility note before promising step-free outcomes.

Secondary forest options: Sherbrooke Falls (~2—2.5 km return typical [VERIFY]) for a short cascade payoff, or a mapped Eastern Sherbrooke segment if legs and daylight remain. Doongalla lawns are a softer optional late stop — not a third hard walk.

This itinerary is planning guidance only. Parks Victoria change-of-conditions and VicEmergency beat every printed plan on the day. If the morning climb runs long or weather turns, converting the afternoon to Grants picnic only still counts as a successful full day.

Track status, weather, gate hours and fire ratings change — verify on Parks Victoria before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Free day entry does not mean empty Ferntree Gully car parks.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Two-act plan + alerts

Write Plan A: morning 1000 Steps, lunch, afternoon Sherbrooke Falls or Eastern Sherbrooke. Plan B: morning climb only + picnic if weather, energy or parking fails. Check FDR, Parks Victoria alerts and deer-control notices. Pack 2 L water capacity across bottles, lunch that does not need a café, rain layer, warm layer and blister care.

  2. 07:00—08:00

    Leave Melbourne / arrive early

Target Ferntree Gully picnic ground in the opening window (gates listed 6:00 am — 9:00 pm daily [VERIFY]). If already congested on approach, divert to One Tree Hill parking immediately — do not burn an hour circling. Final alert check on home Wi-Fi before you leave the CBD.

  3. 08:00—10:30

    1000 Steps block

Complete Kokoda Track Memorial Walk with loop-or-return decision. Photograph plaques without blocking. Water top-up at One Tree Hill or lower toilets. Agree a clock-time turnaround before you climb so the afternoon forest block still has daylight and patience.

  4. 10:30—12:00

    Lunch reset

Picnic at Ferntree Gully or One Tree Hill. Sit down, eat and reassess legs. Do not burn an hour hunting a guaranteed café — Grants van/café status is temporary [VERIFY]. If the morning ran long or anyone is spent, convert afternoon to a short picnic-only stop at Grants / Sherbrooke.

  5. 12:00—15:00

    Quieter forest second act

Drive to Sherbrooke / Grants for Sherbrooke Falls (~2—2.5 km return [VERIFY]) or a mapped Eastern Sherbrooke segment if legs remain. Walk softly for lyrebirds; headphones off. Skip if weather or energy fails — morning climb already succeeded. Stay on formed track in wet gullies.

  6. 15:00—16:00

    Optional lookout or soft exit

Only if clear skies and patience remain: short stop at a signed lookout on the way logic (e.g. Kalorama / Burkes). Otherwise start the Melbourne return with traffic buffer. Do not invent a third hard walk “because the map still has dots.”

  7. Late afternoon

    Melbourne return with margin

Expect Eastern Freeway / M3 friction on fine Sunday afternoons. Stop for fuel or coffee before anyone fades. Winter: respect earlier vehicle-gate closes at some grounds outside daylight saving [VERIFY One Tree Hill / Doongalla windows]. Debrief what to repeat next time.

Parking & access tips

  • Two car parks mean two fill risks — move earlier than feels necessary at both Ferntree Gully and Sherbrooke / Grants.
  • Do not leave the morning car spot “just to check Sherbrooke” without a plan to return or relocate.
  • Keep a physical note of which ground you started from for the end-of-day shuffle.
  • Weekend Ferntree Gully ~full by 10 am — treat that as a hard planning constraint.
  • Never leave valuables visible; peri-urban trailheads attract opportunistic theft.
  • Have a named Plan B picnic ground if Grants / Sherbrooke is already circling mid-afternoon.
  • Train + morning climb is still valid if you then rideshare / second car for the forest act — do not invent illegal parking.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Silvan MTB session on the same day as a hard steps morning
  • Botanic Garden + SkyHigh add-ons (outside park; different tickets/hours)
  • Forcing Eastern Sherbrooke after a slow crowded climb
  • Three picnic grounds plus a lookout hop after 3 pm
  • Assuming Grants café will be open and seating-ready [VERIFY]
  • Promising full all-abilities outcomes on Margaret Lester
  • Starting the 1000 Steps after 10 am and still expecting a long forest afternoon

Extra tips

Energy management

  • The steps are the hard part; keep the afternoon easier on purpose.
  • If the morning ran long, convert afternoon to Grants picnic only.
  • Eat and hydrate before you drive to the second precinct — hangry groups choose bad add-ons.
  • A short Sherbrooke Falls return beats a forced Eastern Sherbrooke loop on tired legs.
  • Save lookouts for clear skies and leftover patience only.

Decision gates

  • Ferntree Gully full? One Tree Hill or train — then continue the day from a honest start.
  • Extreme FDR / severe weather? Cancel the whole day — park closed.
  • Rain + glass steps after lunch? Skip forest mud and go home early.
  • Someone spent at One Tree Hill? Afternoon becomes picnic-only, not heroics.
  • Grants / Sherbrooke full mid-afternoon? Picnic elsewhere or exit — do not invent verge parking.

Crowds & wildlife

  • Morning steps will be busier; afternoon forest is where you earn quieter canopy.
  • Walk softly in Sherbrooke for lyrebirds — headphones off, no off-track chasing.
  • Midweek full days beat fine Saturdays if your calendar allows.
  • Dogs prohibited — do not bring them “just for the picnic half.”

Fire, weather & night ops

  • Tall wet forest is not fire-proof — Extreme FDR closes everything.
  • Carry a shell even if the CBD morning looks mild; gullies turn cold and wet fast.
  • Deer-control selected nights in the 16 Aug – 19 Nov 2026 window — read which sites close that night before dusk plans.
  • Winter vehicle gates at some grounds shorten outside daylight saving [VERIFY].

  • Kokoda Track Memorial Walk (1000 Steps)Melbourne’s most popular bushwalk: steep rainforest steps from Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground to One Tree Hill, memorial plaques for the Kokoda campaign, heavy weekend crowds, and a practical loop-via-Lyrebird or same-way return choice.
  • Sherbrooke FallsShort easy return to a small cascade in Sherbrooke Forest from Sherbrooke or O’Donohue picnic grounds — fern gully atmosphere, best after rain, often calmer than Ferntree Gully’s staircase.
  • Eastern Sherbrooke Forest WalkQuieter longer Sherbrooke Forest alternative when the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk is packed — Mountain Ash and fern gullies, fewer staircase bottlenecks, more navigation discipline required.
