Itineraries

These plans are built for real Melbourne day trips — drive time, Ferntree Gully parking, train Plan B, weather and energy included — not fantasy “do everything” checklists. Pick the plan that matches your group, then open it for a full timeline, packing notes and what to skip. Print from any plan page, or grab the free day planner anytime.

Every itinerary defers to Parks Victoria for track status, gate hours and alerts. Extreme FDR closes the whole park — cancel rather than invent a Plan B that ignores fire.

Which plan fits you?

  • Half-day 1000 Steps — first visit focused on the Kokoda Memorial climb and One Tree Hill.
  • Full-day Ferntree Gully + forest — early start; steps first, then one quieter forest block.
  • Family Olinda / Sherbrooke — short falls circuits, picnic toilets, skip the steps if needed.
  • Quiet midweek / winter — Eastern Sherbrooke or Grants-side forest when crowds are the constraint.
  • Melbourne day trip — realistic CBD travel time, one main walk, leave enough time to get home.

If two plans both “sound good,” pick the shorter one. You can always upgrade on the ground; you cannot invent daylight on the highway home.

Kokoda Track Memorial Walk / 1000 Steps through rainforest gully, Dandenong Ranges National Park

3—5 hours on the ground (+ Melbourne travel)

Half-day: 1000 Steps & One Tree Hill

First visit focused on the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk

One solid climb of the 1000 Steps from Ferntree Gully, One Tree Hill turnaround or Lyrebird loop, a picnic stop, and enough time to get home — without pretending you can also do Sherbrooke and Olinda the same morning.

Tree ferns and understorey in the Dandenong Ranges, Victoria

7—9 hours doors-to-doors from Melbourne

Full day: Ferntree Gully, One Tree Hill & quieter forest

Visitors who want the icon climb plus a calmer forest second act

Morning 1000 Steps with early parking discipline, lunch reset, then Sherbrooke Falls or Eastern Sherbrooke — one hard climb and one quiet forest block, not five rushed picnic grounds.

Open plan →

Olinda Falls, Dandenong Ranges National Park, Victoria

5—7 hours including picnic and travel buffers

Family day: Olinda Falls & Sherbrooke

Families and mixed-ability groups skipping the 1000 Steps climb

Short waterfall circuits, picnic tables, after-rain timing, and honest limits on steps/uneven ground — without using Ferntree Gully’s staircase as the day’s identity.

Mountain Ash and ferns in Sherbrooke Forest, Dandenong Ranges National Park

4—6 hours on the ground

Quiet alternative: midweek / winter forest

Locals and visitors chasing lyrebirds, mist and empty car parks

Skip peak 1000 Steps energy: Eastern Sherbrooke or Grants/Sherbrooke short walks, optional Doongalla picnic, winter gate awareness, and wildlife-first pacing.

Doongalla Homestead Picnic Ground remnant gardens and lawns, Dandenong Ranges National Park

Full calendar day (even if “only” a half-day on the ground)

Melbourne day-trip: travel & parking buffers

CBD / inner-suburb visitors who underestimate doors-to-doors time

A realistic Melbourne day trip: traffic and train buffers, early parking, one main park goal (usually 1000 Steps or family falls), and a hard leave-by time — so you are not stuck choosing dinner in a dark Tourist Road queue.
