Gear essentials for the Dandenong Ranges

Hill-forest weather is not Melbourne CBD weather. Prioritise grip, water, layers and rain protection over gadgets. Continuous stairs (1000 Steps), muddy fern gullies after rain, and lookouts that still burn under UV reward boring kit. Extreme FDR closes the whole park — confirm open before you shop. Soft Olinda / Sherbrooke circuits still need a shell; hard stair days need more water and honesty about fitness.
