Fire / severe weather: Extreme Fire Danger Rating or above closes the entire park, including the 1000 Steps.
Parks Victoria also closes for severe weather events. If closed, do not enter for a “quick look.”
1. Before you leave home
Status & weather
- Parks Victoria park page / change-of-conditions checked this morning
- VicEmergency / CFA / FDR checked (Extreme = cancel)
- Deer-control night notices read if evening / early-morning plan
- Hills forecast (cooler / mistier than CBD) — not only Melbourne city
- Someone knows your rough plan + return window
- Emergency+ app installed while you still have reception
Packing (day pack)
- Water 1 L+ per adult
- Snacks / simple lunch (do not rely on café vans)
- Waterproof / wind shell
- Warm mid-layer (hills run cooler)
- Sun hat + sunscreen for clearings
- Grip shoes (wet steps after rain)
- Phone + offline map option (Avenza / screenshot)
- Basic first aid / blister kit
- Optional: leech socks for wet gullies
2. Which walk to pick (decision filter)
Choose one primary day
- First visit / fitness OK / accept crowds: Kokoda Track Memorial Walk (1000 Steps) from Ferntree Gully — early start.
- Family / easier / after rain: Olinda Falls circuit or Sherbrooke Falls.
- Quieter forest: Eastern Sherbrooke midweek, winter, early or late.
Skip if short / crowded / closed
- Stacking 1000 Steps + Sherbrooke + Olinda on a late Melbourne start
- Waiting for a mythical empty Ferntree Gully bay after 10 am weekends
- Promising kids a café meal (Grants temporary close / van pattern; confirm any Ferntree Gully café)
- Any plan when Extreme FDR or severe weather closes the park
3. Half-day: 1000 Steps focus (≈3–5 hrs on the ground)
- 0:00 — Arrive Ferntree Gully early (or One Tree Hill / train Plan B). Toilets. Valuables not visible in the car.
- 0:15–1:30+ — Climb Kokoda Track Memorial Walk / 1000 Steps. Leave space on narrow steps; treat plaques with respect.
- At One Tree Hill — Rest, toilets, filtered views. Decide same-way return or Lyrebird Track loop. Turning around is allowed.
- Return — Picnic buffer if energy remains. Do not add a second hard walk.
- Home — Protect Melbourne traffic buffer, especially Sunday evenings.
4. Full-day rule (protect the day)
- One hard climb (usually 1000 Steps) + one quieter forest / falls block maximum.
- Do the busy climb first while parking still exists, then move to quieter forest on purpose.
- If Ferntree Gully is full: One Tree Hill, train from Upper Ferntree Gully Station (~1.2 km / 1200 m to steps base), or switch primary goal to Olinda / Sherbrooke.
- Day-use only — camping is not permitted inside this national park.
5. Parking, gates & train
- Weekend: Ferntree Gully typically full by ~10 am — arrive early or use Plan B
- Ferntree Gully / 1000 Steps vehicle gates: 6:00 am – 9:00 pm daily (re-check Parks Victoria)
- One Tree Hill / Doongalla: 6:00 am – 9:00 pm DST; 6:00 am – 6:00 pm non-DST
- Valley & Eagles Nest: shorter windows (DST 9–6; non-DST 9–4)
- Belgrave line → Upper Ferntree Gully Station — confirm current PTV times
- Never leave bags visible in cars
6. Safety non-negotiables
- Steep continuous steps, mud after rain, shared runners — supervise kids; sturdy footwear.
- Dogs are not allowed (assistance dogs with requirements).
- Deer-control nights (published window 16 Aug – 19 Nov 2026, selected nights ~4 pm–7 am): obey signed temporary closures.
- Patchy reception on some forest tracks is a planning note — 000 needs reception; Emergency+ helps.
- Emergency: call 000. Non-emergency Parks Victoria: 13 1963. This planner cannot help with rescue.
