If you are circling Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground after 10 am on a Saturday, the decision is already made: do not “five more minutes” the 1000 Steps. Parks Victoria notes this car park is typically full by about 10 am on most weekend mornings. Convert the plan before tempers and fuel both run out.
Three honest conversions work: Belgrave-line train to Upper Ferntree Gully (about 1.2 km to the steps base per Parks Victoria), park at One Tree Hill at the top, or abandon the memorial climb and take Olinda Falls or Sherbrooke instead. Stacking a late start plus a crowded staircase is how the day fails.

The decision (do this first)
Stop the car in a legal place. Pick one: train + walk in, One Tree Hill, or a different forest. Do not invent a fourth option of “wait for a reverse from the 1000 Steps.”
If anyone in the car is already hungry, tired or late for a booking elsewhere, leave. A memorial staircase does not improve with resentment.
Train: Upper Ferntree Gully Station
Parks Victoria describes about a 1.2 km stroll from Upper Ferntree Gully Station to the base of the 1000 Steps. That is the conversion that saves the climb when the picnic-ground bays are gone.
Check PTV on the day. This is still a walk-in: water, grip shoes, and a reverse clock that beats Ferntree Gully’s vehicle gate window (6 am–9 pm daily when last checked).
One Tree Hill at the top
Parks Victoria suggests trying One Tree Hill Picnic Ground when the lower park is circling. You can walk down and up, or treat the top as picnic-only. Gate hours at One Tree Hill shorten outside daylight saving — verify if you will still be there at dusk.
This is not “skipping the steps.” It is using the signed network the way operators do when the icon car park is full.
Leave the icon — Olinda or Sherbrooke
If the group cannot face more driving-in-circles, go to a short falls circuit. You still had a Dandenong Ranges day. You did not owe the internet a 1000 Steps photo.
Pairing ban: do not “save” the steps for 2 pm after two other picnic grounds. Energy and parking both get worse.

Parks Victoria owns live closures and the published 10 am fill note. The map board and “car park full” reality in front of you own today’s choice. This guide does not show live bays.
